Building a Successful SaaS as a Solopreneur: Insights from Sai Krishna, Founder of Superblog
In this episode of Entrepreneur’s Cafe, we had the pleasure of hosting Sai Krishna, the founder of Superblog, the world’s fastest blogging platform. Sai takes us through his entrepreneurial journey, starting from his college days as an indie hacker to creating a thriving SaaS product as a solo founder.
From Indie Hacker to SaaS Founder:
Sai’s entrepreneurial journey began in college when he built Mhotspot, an app that turned a laptop into a Wi-Fi hotspot. The app, created to solve his own needs, became a massive success, hitting a million downloads while he was still a student. After graduating in 2013, Sai decided to forgo traditional employment to continue building apps and exploring new ideas.
In 2015, Sai moved to Bangalore and co-founded a startup that aimed to bring Mhotspot’s technology into buses and cabs, allowing passengers to stream content locally. Although the project faced challenges and ultimately didn’t succeed, it taught Sai valuable lessons in product development and market adaptation.
The Birth of Superblog:
Sai’s journey took a pivotal turn when he decided to build Superblog, a blogging platform designed to disrupt WordPress. Drawing from his own experiences as a blogger, Sai recognized the need for a faster, more efficient platform. Superblog was born out of this vision, and today it boasts an impressive lineup of clients, including unicorns and global brands.
Acquiring Customers and Building in Public:
Sai’s first customers were acquired through his “build in public” approach, where he shared his progress openly on platforms like LinkedIn and Twitter. This transparency helped him build trust and attract customers, with one of his early clients being Sezzle, a unicorn entering the Indian market.
Building in public wasn’t part of Sai’s original plan, but he quickly realized its value. By sharing updates and being transparent, he addressed potential customers’ concerns and built credibility for Superblog.
Pricing and Product Strategy:
Unlike many indie hackers who offer freemium models, Sai took a different approach. He set a firm price for Superblog and avoided discounts, believing that every customer should receive equal value. His pricing strategy, which started at $9 and has since settled at $29 per month, reflects his commitment to fairness and quality.
Looking Ahead:
Sai’s goal is to reach 100K ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue) before deciding whether to continue solo or build a team to take Superblog to the next level. He’s curious to see how far he can go as a solo founder, but he’s also open to the possibility of scaling with a team.
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs:
Sai’s top three pieces of advice for anyone starting in SaaS are:
- Always prioritize building trust with your customers.
- Consider working with a team, especially when the market potential is large.
- Avoid taking long vacations that disrupt your momentum.
